Election 97

Seats of power

Find out what happened in 1997 for all 641 constituencies in Great Britain - with maps and analyses of local voting behaviour.

You can find your way to our constituency information either by entering a town name, or more powerfully, by using the unique Mapguide plug-in from Autodesk, which will allow you to roam the UK's landscape freely in search of electoral minutiae. If you wish, you can go straight to the constituency maps now, or enter a town right here. If we can find it, you will be given a list of links to follow (bearing in mind that a conurbation may overlap may constituencies)...

Using Mapguide
A picture is worth 1,000 words, so if you'd like to see the electoral terrain, you'll need to use the Mapguide plug-in. We have used Mapguide with maps illustrating old and new electoral constituency boundaries in the UK. These maps are not simple GIFs or JPEGs, but dynamic vector-based charts that allow you to view, interact with, select and retrieve information about parliamentary constituencies in the UK.

If you do not have the plug-in, go to this page for download instructions.

If you do, and would like to know how it works, take a look at our help page.

If you're simply impatient with all this fooling around, go straight to the UK constituency map.

Thanks to Business Geographics for the digital boundary files, Autodesk for the use of their MapGuide Server and Tony Sellen and Adrian Tear at Business Geographics for putting the map application together.
