Election 97

Northern England

North of England 92 North of England 97
A small consolation for the Conservatives was that nothing changed in England's far northern counties of Northumberland and Cumbria, although the overall swing to Labour reduced the Tory majority in rural Hexham to a mere 222.

The news was not so good in neighbouring Durham, Cleveland and Tyne and Wear (included in the North to even out the size of government standard regions). Labour had few target seats here, in fact precisely three, Middlesbrough South, Stockton South and Tynemouth. This was for the simple reason that every other seat returned a Labour MP already. In the event, they took all three targets, and this area is just one of the many in Britain that now return not a single Tory MP to the Commons.
